Sugar on Snow: Memoir of a Northern New York State Farm Kid (2003)
Sugar on Snow: Memoir of a Northern New York State Farm Kid (2003)
Sugar on Snow: Memoir of a Northern NYS Farm Kid by West Chazy native Jane Lawliss Murphy, relates the childhood experiences of the author during the mid-1900s. During the WW II years, the military effort was supported by families across America through extensive rationing and recycling programs. Kids were involved, too, collecting all sorts of items for reuse, including metal toys (ironically, the innocent playthings were transformed into the tools of war).

There are plenty of other memories here, too, of winter sledding and snowball fights; lots of team sports play, including baseball, basketball, and football; swimming in nearby streams; and kids creating their own entertainment before the age of TV and computers. A great look back at the generation that preceded the "baby boomers."

Said Christena Rulli of APN: "Murphy’s writing style is informal and engaging and makes you curious to know more about her life. She uses similes and metaphors to help make scenes more vivid and understanding for the reader."
